… knowing when to STFU* is more important than spewing “content”.
Sure “content creation” is important if you want a web presence. But generating content simply for the sake of putting phosphors on the screen doesn’t always make sense.
Recall that old saying, “God gave us two ears and one mouth so we should listen twice as much as we speak”.
Conversely, just because we have 10 fingers doesn’t mean we should type 5 times as much as we listen.
Believe me, I’ve done more than my share of creating content that’s not worth a shit. But sometimes this “content creation” phase/craze of late seems to be getting out of hand.
Maybe it is time to take a step back and evaluate what we are putting out there on blogs, Facebook, the Twitters and everywhere else.
I am not implying that every word written needs to be deep and profound and contribute to the betterment of society. However; writing because some “guru” (lord how I despise that term) says you HAVE TO CREATE CONTENT TO BE SUCCESSFUL! is pure unadulterated nonsense.
Write what you want to write. Write what you need to write. But at least sit back and ask yourself every once and awhile if that 197th Tweet of the day, or that 23rd blog post of the week really matters.
Sometimes it’s just better to STFU and listen. And learn…
* Just so we’re clear, I’m using the first definition of “STFU”, not the second…
:))
Dang…. The Southern Tenant Farmers Union is gonna be disappointed. They never get any pub.
Great post Jay.
Maybe they could copyright STFU and start suing people for some quick publicity. Not sure what the Southern Tenant Farmers Union would do with all that publicity though…
On the topic at hand, spewing “content” for the sake of filling space on your blog is painfully obvious and a great way to drive people away from your site. The focus should always be on quality, not quantity.
Alex, what do you consider spewing?
